ISRO-Backed Transponders set to revolutionize Fishermen’s Safety in Visakhapatnam
To bolster the safety of fishermen at sea, these devices will enable real-time tracking of fishing vessels, enhancing communication and rescue efforts—a vital step forward that aligns with the technological advancements to be showcased at IFT Expo 2025.
The Visakhapatnam Collector, MN Harendira Prasad, emphasized the importance of ISRO-manufactured transponders for fishermen during emergencies and adverse conditions. Speaking at an event on space technology utilization in the fisheries sector, organized by the Fisheries Survey of India and AP Fisheries department, the collector mentioned that the govt of India has been distributing these transponders free of cost to boat owners.
He encouraged motorized and mechanized boat owners to install the equipment on their vessels.
The collector highlighted that the transponders would provide valuable information on weather and catch, and would be particularly useful during cyclone warnings, alerting fishermen at sea. He stressed the significance of research in science and technology for the country's development, citing the example of Indian scientists' efforts in developing and supplying COVID-19 vaccines to many countries during the pandemic.
D Bhamireddy, from the Fisheries Survey of India (FSI) office, mentioned that they have been raising awareness among fishermen about the free transponders as part of the National Space Day celebrations on August 23. The transponders offer features such as SMS communication, emergency communication, and information on sea borders.
G Vijaya, the Joint Director of the Fisheries Department, stated that the govt is providing free transponders to approximately 350 motorized and 760 mechanized boats. The event was attended by FSI junior scientist GVA Prasad, senior engineer G Prasad Yadav, scientist G Sai Ramakrishna, boat owners association presidents, fishermen, and fisheries officials.
